Monaco rewarded the driver who never put a foot wrong. Kimi Antonelli led every lap from pole and kept his head through a chaotic finish to win his fifth race in a row.
Verstappen out at the start
Max Verstappen’s weekend ended almost immediately. His Red Bull failed as he tried to leave the front row, and he retired without completing a lap.
Two crashes at the same corner and a red flag
Late in the race Lance Stroll crashed at Antony Noghes and brought out the safety car. At the restart Charles Leclerc crashed at the same corner, and the race was red-flagged while officials inspected the recently resurfaced track, which was breaking up. Antonelli held the lead when the race resumed, finishing 6.271s ahead of Lewis Hamilton. With that second place, Hamilton equalled Ayrton Senna’s record of eight Monaco podiums.
Firsts and penalties
Isack Hadjar took third, his first podium for Red Bull. Racing Bulls had a strong day, with Liam Lawson fifth and Arvid Lindblad sixth. Lindblad had stayed out and got a free tyre change under the red flag. Six drivers were penalised for pit-lane speeding. Pierre Gasly dropped from third to seventh, and a wrongly served penalty turned into a drive-through for George Russell, who finished twelfth.
