Mercedes’ fight was settled by a mechanical failure. In cold, wet Montréal, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli went wheel-to-wheel for the lead until Russell’s engine failed. Antonelli went on to win his fourth Grand Prix in a row.
A wet, cold start
Lance Stroll started from the pit lane after a set-up change, and Arvid Lindblad stalled on the formation lap and didn’t take the start. Lando Norris gambled on intermediate tyres and led into Turn 1, but they overheated and he had to pit after two laps. He later retired with a suspected gearbox failure.
Russell against Antonelli
The two Mercedes swapped the lead several times, and they touched at the final chicane. Antonelli was told to give the place back. Then Russell’s power unit failed. Most drivers made their only stop under the Virtual Safety Car that followed, and Antonelli had a clear run to the flag.
Hamilton’s late pass
Lewis Hamilton passed Max Verstappen around the outside at Turn 1 late in the race to take second. Verstappen’s third place was the first podium for the new Red Bull–Ford power unit. Russell had won Saturday’s sprint, but a race-day retirement left him 43 points behind Antonelli.
