Lewis Hamilton finally has his Ferrari Grand Prix win. On a scorching afternoon, with track temperatures above 50°C, Ferrari’s strategy took Hamilton past pole-sitter George Russell and on to his 106th career victory.
Strategy decides it
Russell led from pole with Hamilton second on soft tyres. Ferrari timed Hamilton’s stops to get him out ahead, and a Virtual Safety Car, called when Fernando Alonso stopped in his home race, helped them. From there Hamilton pulled away to win by 19.561s.
Antonelli’s lost points
Kimi Antonelli had fought through to second and passed Russell late in the race, but broke his front wing end plate doing it. He slowed and retired four laps from the end, and the championship leader’s streak ended with no points. Charles Leclerc retired at almost the same time with broken power steering.
An all-British podium
Lando Norris finished third behind Hamilton and Russell, the first all-British podium since 1968. Pierre Gasly climbed from 14th to seventh. A post-race penalty for Franco Colapinto dropped him to tenth.
Antonelli still leads on 156 points, but Hamilton has closed to 115.
