F1 2026 Rules Explained: New Engines, Active Aero and Overtake Mode

A plain-English guide to Formula 1's 2026 regulations: the 50/50 hybrid power units, Straight and Corner Mode active aero, Overtake Mode, and smaller, lighter cars.

Key takeaway

The 2026 rules gave F1 all-new cars. Power units now make roughly half their power from electricity (the MGU-K rises to 350 kW, and the MGU-H is gone) and run on fully sustainable fuel. Movable front and rear wings switch between a low-drag Straight Mode and a high-downforce Corner Mode. DRS has been replaced by Overtake Mode, which gives a chasing driver extra electrical energy. The cars are also shorter, narrower and 32 kg lighter.

2026 brought the biggest rule change Formula 1 has had in years: new power units, new aerodynamics and a new way to overtake. Here’s what changed and why it matters on track.

The power unit: half electric

The 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 stays, but the balance of power has shifted a long way.

  • About 50% of the power is electric, up from roughly 20%.
  • The MGU-K, which recovers energy under braking and deploys it through the rear wheels, now produces up to 350 kW, up from 120 kW.
  • The MGU-H has been dropped. It was complex and expensive, and road-car manufacturers never adopted it.
  • Every car runs on advanced sustainable fuel.

There are five engine manufacturers: Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull–Ford, Honda and Audi.

Why it matters: with so much electric power, managing the battery is now a big part of racing. On long straights a car can run out of deployable energy, which drivers call “clipping”. You’ll hear it discussed at tracks like Baku. Early in the season, the FIA adjusted energy limits from the Miami Grand Prix onwards after concerns about big differences in closing speed between cars. Oliver Bearman’s crash at Suzuka was one example of what those speed differences can lead to.

Active aerodynamics: Straight Mode and Corner Mode

The front and rear wings can now move.

  • Straight Mode: the wing elements flatten to reduce drag and raise top speed.
  • Corner Mode: they close again to create downforce for the corners.

This lets teams run more downforce for the corners without paying for it on the straights, which used to be the central setup compromise.

Overtake Mode replaces DRS

DRS, the flap that opened on the rear wing, has gone. Instead:

  • Overtake Mode: if you’re within one second of the car ahead at the detection point, you get extra electrical energy and deployment on the next lap.
  • Boost: a button drivers can use to deploy energy whenever they choose, to attack or to defend.
  • Recharge: energy is recovered under braking, when lifting off the throttle, and in some full-throttle situations.

Smaller, lighter cars

2025 2026
Minimum weight 800 kg 768 kg
Wheelbase 3.6 m 3.4 m
Width 2.0 m 1.9 m
Tyres — 25 mm narrower front, 30 mm narrower rear

The floor is also flatter and the front wing simpler, which is meant to reduce the dirty air a car leaves behind and make it easier to follow closely.

How it’s played out

Mercedes adapted best. They won the first six Grands Prix of the season, and Kimi Antonelli has led the championship since Round 3. Ferrari and McLaren have both won races since, while Red Bull is still waiting for its first win of the new era. See every result on the 2026 calendar.

FAQ

What replaced DRS in F1 in 2026?

Overtake Mode. A driver who is within one second of the car ahead at a detection point gets extra electrical energy and deployment on the next lap to help them attack. There is also a manual Boost button that drivers can use to attack or defend.

What is active aerodynamics in F1 2026?

Both the front and rear wings can change angle. In Straight Mode the wings flatten to cut drag on the straights. In Corner Mode they close to create downforce for grip through the corners.

How much electric power do 2026 F1 cars have?

Around half of the power comes from the electrical system. The MGU-K now delivers up to 350 kW, compared with 120 kW before, and the MGU-H has been removed.

How heavy is a 2026 F1 car?

The minimum weight is 768 kg, down from 800 kg. The wheelbase is 200 mm shorter, at 3.4 m, and the car is 100 mm narrower, at 1.9 m.
